Beyond Agile, Pt 2: From Outputs to Outcomes — the Terminology Staircase

Facilitated by Tox B.

Part 2 of the Beyond Agile series, continuing from Ola’s opening session. Tox picks up the thread, moving from “why the gap exists” into the vocabulary needed to close it.

This session introduces the Terminology Staircase: inputs (budget, time, effort) → outputs/deliverables (the tangible thing handed over) → outcomes (what people do differently) → benefits (the measurable advantage gained) → business value (the strategic, long-term worth realized). The “value zone” sits between outcomes and benefits — and most teams stop measuring well before they get there.

Learning Objectives

Learn the five-step terminology staircase from inputs to business value.
Practice translating outputs into outcomes using real examples (e.g., “700 new subscribers” vs. “a loyal, growing customer base”).
Understand why “you cannot optimize what you do not measure” applies specifically to outcomes, not just outputs.
Connect this vocabulary back to the value gap introduced in Part 1.

Who Should Attend?

Scrum Masters, Product Owners, and Agile Coaches who want sharper language for what their team’s work is actually accomplishing.

Key Takeaways

A reusable framework for translating outputs into outcome language.
Practical examples of output-to-outcome translation applicants can use immediately.
Groundwork for Part 3: how this maps to the PMBOK 7 shift.
